Police Raid Okada Riders In Apapa

Officials and trucks of the Lagos State Task Force which raided
Apapa yesterday in search of commercial motorcycles
 popularly called Okada
The Lagos State Environmental Task Force yesterday raided cyclist operating at the Tin Can Island Port for operating in a prohibited area.
Even though the actual number of motorcycles seized could not be ascertained by Shipping Position Daily, our correspondent however spotted a truck load of seized motorcycles at the scene.
It was gathered that the task force had been invited by the Nigerian Ports Authority which had earlier banned operation of motorcyclists popularly known as "okada" within the port area.
Our correspondent noted that the raid at the port yesterday however led to port users getting stranded at the popular Custom Long Room because according to sources "the tricycles (Maruwa) shuttling within the Tin Can Port are not enough to transport operators"
Speaking with our correspondent, a licensed custom agents, Mr. Charles Ubah pointed out that operators can no longer make use of the Apapa Oshodi expressway as a result of the long queue of container trucks that has taken over the road.
This according to him, has led to them making use of the port access road within the Tin Can Port.
Charles who is a chieftain of the Tin Can office of ANLCA however blamed the Nigerian Ports Authority for the frequent traffic on Apapa/Oshodi expressway.
He alleged that the NPA security officers in collaboration with Police officers at the Tin Can ‘2nd gate’, collaborate to collect as much as N10, 000 from each truck driver for them to remain on the expressway.
