Federal Government is set to set up more satellites equipment to monitor maritime activities on the nation's territorial waters.
This revelation was made in Lagos yesterday by the Senior Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Maritime affairs, Mr. Leke Oyewole during a visit to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).
According to Oyewole, the multiple satellite surveillance at sea will further assist the authorities to get more reports on what transpires at sea, noting that the current information by the present satellites are not enough.
The Special Adviser also disclosed that the government will deploy drones to complement effort of the maritime agencies on water, pointing out that more aircraft and platforms will be used for day-to-day operations at sea to quash illegal activities.
He reiterated that the additional satellites will further strengthen the collaboration between the Navy, Air Force and the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in curbing illegal activities within the nation's territorial waters.
"We want to make sure that we separate the satellite that will relay information to us and that is why we are working to ensure that we put in place more satellites for us to get regular information on what goes on our waters"
"We are not going to rely on the satellite, but then we will also deploy more aircraft and drones which are all going to be linked to a ground station that will relate to the automated agencies that will create just one internet platform", Leke Oyewole stated.
He further reiterated that the services of the maritime agencies like Navy, NIMASA, marine police, Air Force will not be overshadowed as a result of the new development, but explained that rather the satellites are to assist their operations.
The senior official noted that the maritime agencies will also play a key role in ensuring security and safety at sea is of essence.
Earlier in his remark, the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Shippers’ Council, Barrister Hassan Bello harped on the need for the Federal Government to put in place policies that can drive the sector.
Bello said that the political will on the part of the federal government is of essence to maritime sector growth, adding that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council has grown to a brand in making the port more effective.
