Fresh Anxiety Over Customs CG’s Job

CG Customs, Alh. Abdullahi Inde Dokko.
Even though he was rumored to have been granted a tenure extension of two years, and even though some argued that his appointment is not tenured, there are indications that the appointment of the Comptroller  General of Nigeria Customs Service; Alhaji Dikko Abdulahi Inde is once again shaking.
Sources at the Ministry of Finance and the Customs Service confirmed to Shipping Position Daily that the Customs boss may have been handed a terminal letter to wind up in December.
He was said to have been under intense pressure since August when his tenure expired from lobbyist who are bent on exiting him from the highly coveted office.
Our correspondent also confirmed that contrary to speculations, the Customs CG has not received any official letter from either the Presidency or the supervisory Federal Ministry of Finance for him to continue to function as the head of Customs.
Shipping Position Daily confirmed that even though government is impressed with the reforms that the Customs has undergone, the Ministry of Finance is interested in picking a replacement for the CG to implement the implementation of destination inspection under the Nigeria Customs Service.
A senior official in the ministry hinted that President Goodluck Jonathan is likely to be presented with replacement from the rank of an Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) soon.
This was corroborated by another senior officer in the Customs who also confirmed that the incumbent never got any letter of extension of tenure. “They (government) were just quiet about it. I know that ‘oga’ has been having some issues lately, but I cannot confirm if there is any letter”, he told our correspondent in reference to news that the Customs CG was actually given till December to wind down his activities.
The news has also been fuelled by renewed and intense lobbying by various interests who are bent on having their candidate emerge as successor. There is another group who is also working to ensure that the incumbent stays on.
As at last week, the choice has been narrowed to officers from the North who are ACGs, even though there is intense lobby that the slot should be given to North-East for political balancing.
Those who are playing up the ethno-geopolitical sentiment pointed at the fact that the zone does not have any of its own at the helms of affair in any of such agencies since the removal of the immediate past managing director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Engr Omar Suleiman.
They pointed at the Police, Customs, CBN, NNPC, and NPA as being occupied by North Westerners, while the East has none.
Shipping Position Daily learnt last week that barring any last minute change, a replacement may be announced any moment soon.
It will be recalled that the only indication of an extension of the tenure of Dikko was a paid public notice that was published in a national newspaper some months back in which three individuals who identified themselves as friends of the Customs CG to congratulate him.
The trio of who identified themselves as:  Dr. Randy Brown, Alhaji Usman Bawa and Arc. Green Markson had praised the CG for doing very well.
Shipping Position Daily also recalls that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had to openly commend the reforms that were being carried out by the Customs boss to douse tension.

After a meeting of the board of the Customs, the minister, had in apparent reaction to the rumors and the impeding takeover of destination inspection from the service providers, said: “I think from what I hear that it’s going relatively ok, it’s not easy. I don’t think there’s any organization that goes through a transition period without some pains. I think the Customs is handling itself fairly well and I count on the CG to ensure a smooth transition. And it’s only a couple more months, two three more months and customs is in charge. So I am sure that everybody is gearing up”

But our source confirmed last week that the board, which is headed by the Minister, does not speak bad of the leadership of the Customs, but members are in the know of the current moves to effect a change.http://shippingposition.com.ng/article/fresh-anxiety-over-customs-cg%E2%80%99s-job

  1. Nothing lasts forever. He has done well for the NCS so far, but the federal government is thinking that he should handover to a younger person to implement the reforms. So be it
