Unease At NPA As New Managing Director ‘Absconds’ From Office

MD, NPA; Prince Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero
About two months after he was appointed as the managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA), Prince Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero has been away from the organisation consistently.
The apparent disinterest in his new appointment is already taking its toll on operations of the strategic federal government agency.
Investigations by Shipping Position Daily revealed that cumulatively the Kano Prince may not spent more than six hours  at the Marina, Lagos head office of the agency since he was appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in April, 2015.
Sanusi, a lawyer and long considered the crown prince who was to succeed his late father before the Kano State Emirate Council settled for the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and current emir, Muhammad Sanusi II, took over from Mallam Habib Abdullahi as the managing director of the NPA.
Because of the ‘strange habit’ of the new managing director to his new office, many sensitive issues that are supposed to have been addressed have been left unattended to.
Even though no one was willing to talk on the matter because of its sensitive nature, some staff who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent last week that, the new NPA boss sometimes work from his hotel room.
An insider confirmed to our correspondent that even the once-regular management meetings are no longer held regularly.
“The truth is, everything is slowed down, nothing is moving, we have a problem, the man (MD) is hardly seen anywhere, he does not come to the office”, he confided in our correspondent.
Another official of the agency, who also pleaded anonymity alluded that “morale of workers is very low, there is anxiety everywhere, it’s like the MD is afraid, or he is incompetent to act in the capacity of MD of NPA”.
Feeling a bit lost, he told Shipping Position Daily on telephone that,  “he(MD) is never in the office, he asks that files and documents should be brought to him in his hotel room, he picks the ones he wants. We have bags of untreated files, memos, vouchers and files that have been waiting for the MD’s attention for weeks”.
While the President of the NPA branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN); Comrade Adeleke Sani could not be reached for comments, a senior member of the union confirmed to our correspondent that the union has had reports of the absence of the new managing director form his duty post.
He said “sincerely, we have had the story, but we have not confirmed, they (staff) told us that the MD is never around and that everything is on slow motion”. He refused to speak further because he has no authority to speak to the press.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that, while taking over from his predecessor in May, Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero had promised to work hard.
At the brief address ceremony, the new managing director had said he hoped to work at his best with the staff for the benefit of the nation.
“I hope we work together for the interest of the country because I know that anything that affects this place will affect the larger society
“We will put in efforts to undertake programmes that will grow the authority through togetherness; he had assured the management and workers.http://shippingposition.com.ng/article/unease-npa-new-managing-director-%E2%80%98absconds%E2%80%99-office
