Buhari Reinstates Sacked NPA MD; Habib Abdulahi

I WILL BE BACK: Then-outgoing MD of NPA; Alhaji Habib Abdullahi (L) in smiles (as if he knew he would be back soon) as he gives handover note to then-incoming MD; Prince  Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero at the corporate head office of NPA in May, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has reinstated Mr. Habibu Abdullahi as the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority.
He therefore relieved Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero of his appointment as the MD.
Bayero’s appointment was one of the late hour decisions taken by former President Goodluck Jonathan shortly after he lost his re-election bid in the March 28 presidential election.
Jonathan had on April 29, exactly one month to his handover date, sacked Abdullahi and replaced him with Bayero without giving any reason for his action.
But the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement on Thursday, said Buhari had ordered Abdullahi’s reinstatement with immediate effect.
Adesina said Bayero had been ordered to hand over the NPA and all government property in his possession to the reinstated MD.
The statement read: “President Muhammadu Buhari has terminated the appointment of the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero.
“The termination of Alhaji Bayero’s appointment is with immediate effect.
“He is to hand over the management of the NPA and all government property in his possession to Mr. Habibu Abdullahi who has been reinstated as Managing Director of the NPA by President Buhari.
“President Buhari wishes Alhaji Bayero well in his future endeavours.”
Alhaji Bayero’s was among former President Goodluck Jonathan last-minutes appointments.
He was appointed to the position on April 29 after Mr. Abdullahi’s removal.
No reason was given for Abdullahi’s removal at the time.
The review of former President Jonathan’s last-minutes appointment is one of the key recommendations of the Ahmed Joda transition committee set up by President Buhari before his assumption of office.
The recommendation is part of a portfolio of swift steps the committee believes  Buhari must take within three months of assumption of power if he must succeed.
The Joda committee had stated equivacally that the president should review all appointments made by Jonathan in the last nine months, and “for strategic agencies requiring professional leadership, the government should terminate all appointments not based on merit”.
The Joda panel said such move will save costs associated with poor decision making by an incompetent management team, and must be delivered within 45 days of the new government.
That recommendation appears to take into consideration the last minute appointments by former President Jonathan after he lost the March 28 elections.I WILL BE BACK: Then-outgoing MD of NPA; Alhaji Habib Abdullahi (L) in smiles (as if he knew he would be back soon) as he gives handover note to then-incoming MD; Prince Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero at the corporate head office of NPA in May, 2015
