Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council; Mr Hassan Bello has assured that the imminent introduction of advanced cargo information system, also known as Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) will eradicate the rampant cases of sharp practices in the nation’s seaports.
Bello gave this assurance last Thursday when he received the Comptroller General of Customs; Col Hameed Ali (rtd) at the Council’s corporate head office in Apapa, Lagos.Bello told his guest that he was optimistic that once the advanced cargo information system is introduced, cases of under-declaration and concealment of goods would be checkmated
He was reacting to the lamentation of the Customs boss who had sought the cooperation of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council as the Economic Regulator of the ports to end all the cases sharp practices in the process of cargo importation.
Ali had faulted operations of multinational shipping companies in Nigeria, saying that most of the shipping manifests of the consignments that they carry are surrounded with irregularities.
Calling for synergy among maritime agencies in ensuring that importation and exportation of consignment are properly documented, the Customs CG noted that since the shippers council is the port commercial regulator, there is need for it to collaborate with the customs service, adding that customs has put in place mechanism to address the irregularities surrounding shipping manifest.
But responding, the Shippers Council boss told his guest that the conduct of shippers involved in under-declaration and concealment is an act of tax evasion and that the advanced cargo information system will check this trend and in turn increase revenue generation from the ports.
Bello said the system has the capacity to generate credible data and has the benefits of security of cargoes being imported into the country.http://shippingposition.com.ng/article/cargo-tracking-note-will-check-under-declaration-concealment-others-ports-shippers-council-b
