Family Of Deceased Dockworker‘ll Be Compensated, Says Five Star Logistics Official

The Management of Five Star Logistics Terminal in Lagos on Monday said it would pay all entitlements of the dockworker, Mr Pius Ifah, who died on Sept. 30, to his family.
The Group Chief Accountant of Five Star Logistics, Mr Bashiru Adesina , who made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, noted that the management was waiting for the report of an investigation into the accident that claimed the life of the dockworker.
He said the company was used to observing safety standards in all its operations.
Adesina added that the company was aware of the occupational hazards and had serious concerns about safety.``We observe safety standards in all our operations. Since this happened, we have given all the necessary information to the insurance company for the family to be compensated.
``What happened at the terminal on that day was purely an accident and could not have been a deliberate act because we are safety-conscious.
``The reports will, however, tell us what really happened at the terminal and the necessary actions that will be taken,’’ he said.
The late Ifah died when some heavy duty pipes rolled off and fell on him.
Other dockworkers in protest, temporarily stopped work at the terminal as a mark of solidarity for the deceased.
Shipping Position Daily had reported that the 62-Year Old Dockworker Dies At Five Star Terminal Tin Can Port after heavy metal pipes fell on him, he died before he could get to the hospital.
The tragic incident led to the shutdown of the terminal for about 12 hours.
The deceased, a dockworker had reportedly finished off loading the pipes from a vessel at about 3 a .m. But he was said to have been waiting for his other colleagues, when one of the pipes rolled from the heap, trapping his leg. In his bid to forcefully remove his trapped legs, the impact reportedly caused other pipes to roll off, burying him on the ground.
Adesina had confirmed that, “it was an accident and investigations are still on-going, we cannot say anything until we get a report of the incident and the cause of the death of the dockworker.
“Normally, compensations are paid, we are human we must do everything possible to cushion the effect of incident on the family of the deceased.”
He had also told our correspondent that there are people who coordinate the issue of compensation as the Union, the family and the company must agree before such payments are made.http://shippingposition.com.ng/article/family-deceased-dockworker%E2%80%98ll-be-compensated-says-five-star-logistics-official
