Reps May Split Marine Transport Committee Into Two

There are indications that the House of Representatives may have spilt the Marine Transport committee into two as part of its move to create additional standing committees in the lower legislative chamber.
Our correspondent confirmed that, the leadership of the House, especially its Speaker; Yakubu Dogara has been convinced to increase the number its committees from 84 to 95.One of the beneficiaries of the increase is the House committee on Marine Transport which was created in 1999.
If approved, the Marine Transport committee will be split into: Ports, Harbour & Waterways committee and Maritime, Safety and Administration Committees.
The Ports, Harbour and Waterways committee will oversee agencies such as Nigerian Ports Authourity, National Inland Waterways Authourity and Nigerian Shippers’ Council. The Maritime, Safety and Administration Committee will superintend the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.
Details of other responsibilities of the two proposed committees were unclear as at press time.
The House of Representatives has 360 members, and each of them is expected to belong to more than one committee.
To fix members into committee, the House leadership had constituted a selection sub-committee which is chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Yussuf Lasun. Other members of the committee are Hon. Onawo Ogoshi (Nassarawa PDP), Hon. Babangida Ibrahim (Katsina APC), Hon. Aisha Dukku (Gombe APC), Hon. Ayo Omidiran (Osun APC), Hon. Betty Apiafi (Rivers PDP) and Hon. Goodluck Opiah (Imo PDP). They represent all the six geopolitical zoneshttp://shippingposition.com.ng/article/reps-may-split-marine-transport-committee-two
